Grover Washington Jr. was an American jazz-funk and soul-jazz saxophonist and Grammy Award winner. Born on December 12, 1943, in Buffalo, New York, he was raised in a musical family with his father, a tenor saxophonist, and his mother, a church chorister. Washington began playing the saxophone at age 8 and went on to study with Elvin Shepherd, a legendary trumpet player and saxophonist. Washington’s early career included stints with the Four Clefs and Mark III Trio before he was drafted into the U.S. Army. After leaving the service, he began freelancing in New York City and Philadelphia, eventually releasing his first album, Inner City Blues, in 1971.

Washington’s breakthrough came with his 1974 album Mister Magic, which reached number one on Billboard’s R&B album chart and ten on the Top 40 album chart. His 1981 single “Just the Two of Us,” featuring Bill Withers, became his biggest hit, peaking at number two on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and winning the Grammy Award for Best R&B Song in 1982. Washington collaborated with numerous artists throughout his career, including Patti LaBelle, Phyllis Hyman, and Billy Cobham. He was known for his smooth jazz style, blending soul, funk, and classical music elements. Washington’s legacy inspires and influences many pop, R&B, and jazz artists.
