Doris Day was an acclaimed American actress and singer who rose to fame in the 1950s and 1960s. She began her career as a big band singer in the 1940s, achieving commercial success with hits like “Sentimental Journey” and “My Dreams Are Getting Better All the Time” with Les Brown and His Band of Renown. She went on to star in a string of popular films, including musicals like Calamity Jane (1953) and comedies like Pillow Talk (1959), for which she received an Academy Award nomination. Day was known for her wholesome, optimistic screen persona that came to epitomize the ideal American woman of the 1950s. She continued acting in films throughout the 1960s, often co-starring with leading actors like Rock Hudson, James Garner, and Clark Gable. After retiring from films in 1968, Day starred in her own television series The Doris Day Show from 1968 to 1973.
