t.A.T.u. was a Russian pop duo formed in Moscow in 1999 by Lena Katina and Julia Volkova. The group was managed by producer and director Ivan Shapovalov and signed with Russian record label Neformat. They gained international fame with their debut album 200 Po Vstrechnoy (2001) and its English version 200 km/h in the Wrong Lane (2002), which included hits like “All the Things She Said” and “Not Gonna Get Us”. The duo represented Russia in the Eurovision Song Contest 2003 with the song “Ne ver’, ne boysia”, finishing third.t.A.T.u.’s second album Dangerous and Moving (2005) had moderate success, and they went on to release Waste Management (2009) before officially breaking up in 2011. The duo reunited for special performances, including the 2014 Sochi Olympics opening ceremony. After the breakup, both members pursued solo careers, with Lena Katina having a more successful solo career in Russia and Julia Volkova releasing a few singles. The duo’s music often featured catchy synth-pop rock and a sexualized image, which was particularly notable for its lesbian themes. Their contract with Shapovalov was terminated in 2004 due to disagreements over artistic direction and the portrayal of their sexuality.
