Davis was born in 1926 in Alton, Illinois and grew up in East St. Louis. He began playing trumpet in his early teens and moved to New York City in 1944 to study at Juilliard, though he ended up skipping many classes to jam with jazz masters like Dizzy Gillespie and Charlie Parker.

In the late 1940s, Davis recorded the influential “Birth of the Cool” sessions, which helped develop the cool jazz style. In the 1950s, he recorded some of the earliest hard bop music while on the Prestige label, though his heroin addiction at the time caused him to record haphazardly.
